AESE Annual Meeting

2025 Annual Meeting
The 2025 AESE annual meeting will take place October 1–5 (Wednesday–Sunday) at Biddle Hotel on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. Located approximately 1 hour south of Indianapolis (and the nearest airport), Bloomington is a vibrant campus town with many restaurants; nightlife options; and cozy, tree-lined streets. Featured in the 1979 movie “Breaking Away,” Bloomington and Monroe County are internationally known for the quarrying (“cutting”) of Salem Limestone, used in hundreds of government buildings and landmarks around the country.

The following summary agenda offers a glimpse at the meeting programs. A full agenda is forthcoming. Agenda is subject to change.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 1 - AESE Board meeting; evening welcome reception; social event
  • Thursday, Oct. 2 - Survey editors' breakfast; morning & afternoon technical sessions; AESE business luncheon; limestone campus tour; social event
  • Friday, Oct. 3 - Freelance editors' breakfast; morning field trip; afternoon technical sessions; cocktail hour & awards banquet
  • Saturday, Oct. 4 - All-day field trip; stops include Maple Hill quarry, tidalites along St. Rte. 37, Avoca Spring, and Spring Mill State Park
  • Sunday, Oct. 5 - AESE Board meeting

LODGING
To get the group rate for rooms at the Biddle Hotel, reservations must be made no later than September 1. The group rate is valid for a few extra nights if desired on each end of the meeting, but you will need to call the hotel to arrange that. If you are pretty sure you are coming to the meeting, get your reservation in early so that we can block out more rooms if needed. To reserve a room, use a the button below.

Technical Sessions
Meeting attendees are invited to submit proposals for technical talks (see formal call for abstracts below). Examples of past technical session presentation topics include:
  • Development of an outreach poster about Mount St. Helens in Washington State.
  • Development of outreach posters and trading cards relating to fossils in Ohio.
  • An interactive editing session about when and when not to use hyphens.
  • Tips and tricks for shortening and sharpening writing.
  • Tools for tracking publications as they move through the publishing process.
  • Making geologic maps accessible.
  • Communicating in plain language about earth science topics, such as natural hazards.

AESE is the Association of Earth Science Editors. We are a group of editors, publishers, and science communicators coming together to share our knowledge and experience in development, editing, and publication of earth science content. Our members come from a range of backgrounds, from state, federal, and provincial geological survey editors, to freelance editors and university educators. The purpose of AESE is to foster education and improved communication in the earth sciences by providing efficient means for cooperation among editors and promoting effective dissemination of earth science information.
